99 is built so that there is almost nothing to collect. Used on your own, your player card never leaves your phone. If you put a photo-checked result on a leaderboard, or join a team, a short summary of it is shared — and this page says exactly which parts, and nothing else goes.
Four separate things are covered here: the app on your own, photo checks and leaderboards, the app with a team, and this website. They collect very different amounts, so they are described separately.
The app, on your own
Your card stays on your device. Every rating, every drill result, every session and your whole history are stored locally on your phone. Without an account there is no server involved at all, and we cannot see any of it.
Your birth date never leaves your phone. Before you can use the app it asks for your birth month and year, so that under-13s can be turned away. The answer is checked on the device and stored on the device. It is never transmitted.
Nothing is recorded or watched. 99 does not use your microphone, your photo library or your location. It does not detect, score or time your training: every result in the app is one you typed in yourself. Nothing is ever captured in the background, and the app never opens your camera on its own. There are two places you can choose to use it, both described below: the photo check before a drill, and video you send your coach if you join a team.
No tracking. The app contains no advertising SDK, no analytics SDK and no third-party trackers. It does not build a profile of you.
Photo checks and leaderboards
The photo check. Before a drill that needs a ball, a hoop or a court, the app asks for one photo of it. It only takes one when you tap the button, and only from the camera, never your photo library. The photo goes to our server, which sends it to Anthropic's Claude AI with one question: is the right thing in the picture? The answer comes back in a few seconds and the photo is then discarded. 99 never stores it, and under Anthropic's commercial terms photos sent this way are not used to train its models. What we keep is the answer: pass or fail, which drill, when, and on a fail the AI's one-line reason, which is what the app shows you.
You are asked first, and you can say no. The first time, the app tells you the photo goes to Anthropic's AI and asks for your OK. Say not now, or turn the camera off, and the drill still runs and counts on your card. It just does not go on a leaderboard.
The leaderboards. A drill you pass the photo check on goes on that drill's leaderboard, and you appear on the overall board for 30 days after your last photo-checked drill. Every 99 player can see those boards. On them, other players see your display name, your position, your overall rating and your best photo-checked result on each drill. Nothing else: no history, no sub-skills, no birth date, nothing about where you are.
One switch takes you off. Settings → Leaderboards hides you from every board at once, and you can turn it back on at any time. Any name on a board can be reported to us or blocked by tapping it.
Rows marked PACE are targets set by 99, not real players. Rows marked NBA are published NBA Draft Combine results (stats.nba.com). 99 is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NBA.
The app, with a team
Teams are optional. Joining a team means sharing a summary of your card with the people in that team.
What we hold
- An account identifier, and the email address you sign in with. If you use Apple or Google, that identifier comes from them and we never see a password at all — Apple's sign-in can also hide your email behind a private relay, and we do not need your real one. If you sign in with an email and password, the password is stored only as a one-way hash by Supabase, our authentication provider. We cannot read it, and nobody at 99 can see it.
- A display name and, if you set one, your position — guard, wing or big.
What gets shared with your team
- Your overall rating and tier, and your five category ratings — shooting, finishing, handle, defense, conditioning.
- Which drills you have run in the last seven days, and on which days. The drill and the date only.
- Whether you have a session open right now, which is what puts "in the gym" next to your name.
- A short activity feed: that you started a session, how many drills you logged, and when you cross a rating milestone.
- A weekly history of the same ratings — your overall and the five categories, once a week, for up to six months. It is the same numbers already listed above with time attached, so a coach can see whether you are improving. It never includes sub-skills, individual drill results or anything you did not already share.
Video you send your coach
This is the only part of 99 that holds a recording of a person, so it is described in full.
It only happens if you choose it. A coach can ask for a video on a drill, and you can send one on any drill without being asked. The app never films anything on its own, and it never uploads from your camera roll without you picking the file.
- Who can see it: two people. You, and the coach of the team you sent it to. Not your teammates — not even on the same team. There is no feed, no browsing, and no way for anyone else to reach it.
- It is stored privately and can only be played through a link that expires after an hour, so a copied link stops working rather than living forever.
- It deletes itself after 30 days. You do not have to do anything. Every clip shows how long it has left, and you can delete it yourself at any time before that. Your coach can delete it too.
- Comments your coach writes on a clip are stored with it and go when it goes.
If something is wrong with a video or a comment, report it. There is a report control on every clip and on every piece of feedback. Reporting hides it from you immediately and sends it to us to review. You can block the other person at the same time. You can also leave a team at any point, which ends the sharing.
99 has a minimum age of 13. If you believe a video of a child has been shared with someone who should not have it, email privacy@play99.lol and we will remove it.
What is never shared, even with your team: the actual results you posted (except a photo-checked best you put on a leaderboard), the numbers you typed, your individual sub-skill ratings, your full training history, your settings, or your birth date. A teammate can see that you trained and where your ratings stand. They cannot see your workings.
Who can see it
Your team summary: only people in a team with you. The leaderboards above are the only thing other players can see, and only once you have put a photo-checked result on one. There is no public profile and no search. Teams are joined by a code someone gives you.
How much your team sees depends on which kind it is, and you are told which when you join:
- A squad — everyone on the roster sees everyone else. That mutual visibility is the point of it.
- A trainer's client list — you see yourself and your trainer. Other clients cannot see you, and you cannot see them.
A coach can also group players privately to make assigning work easier. Those groups are visible only to the coach, and players are not shown which ones they are in.
You can block anyone in your team, which immediately stops their card and activity reaching you and yours reaching them, and you can report a player to us. Blocking and reporting are in the team screen, next to each name.
The database is hosted by Supabase, which stores it on our behalf. We do not sell it, rent it, or share it with anyone else.
Location is never involved. "In the gym" comes from you starting a session in the app, not from where your phone is. 99 asks for no location permission of any kind.
Deleting everything
Settings → Delete account and data removes all of it: your card, every result, your history, your session, the birth date you gave the age gate, and — if you have an account — your profile, your published ratings, your leaderboard entries, your activity, your team memberships and the account itself. It is immediate and it cannot be undone.
Two things worth knowing before you do it. If you created a team, the team is deleted with you, and the app warns you before it happens. And if the deletion cannot reach our server, the app stops and tells you rather than clearing your phone and leaving your published card behind — a deletion either happens everywhere or not at all.
Removing the app deletes what is on the device, but not an account. Use the button.
Children
99 is not intended for children under 13, and the age gate blocks them from creating a card. We do not knowingly collect any information from a child under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, delete the data in Settings or contact us below.
Where a coach or trainer uses 99 with players under 18, they can see the same summary as a teammate — ratings, which drills were run, and session activity. Nothing more, and nothing about where anyone is. If you are a parent and want your child's data removed, use the delete button in the app or email us.
This website
If you join the waitlist, we store the email address you give us, so that we can tell you when 99 opens. That list is held by Kit (ConvertKit), which processes it on our behalf. We do not sell it, rent it, or share it. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and using it removes you.
Analytics. We use Umami to count visits. It sets no cookies, does not fingerprint you, and does not follow you to other websites. It records aggregate information — page views, rough country, which link brought you here, what kind of device you are on — and none of it identifies you personally.
The card builder on the home page is a toy. The position and style you tap are counted in aggregate so we know which options people pick. It is not a real rating, it is not stored against you, and it does not follow you into the app.
There is no advertising on this site and no third-party ad tracking.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. In practice that is the waitlist and, if you have one, your account — both of which you can remove yourself. Anything still on your phone is beyond our reach by design.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect, we will update the date at the top, and say so in the app or on the waitlist before the change takes effect.
